ENGLISH WINES ARE MAKING THEIR MARK [Click for more detail] For a variety of reasons, English wines are showing better and better, and some sparkling wines such as Nyetimber [Sussex] are truly of international standard and even World-class.
As climate change lends a hand, vines are also becoming older [which drives up grape quality & complexity] and technical expertise and experience are growing substantially. With Sterling now so low versus the Euro, the quality/price ratio has been helped dramatically in comparison to Eurozone wines. Just before Christmas 2009, I tasted Nyetimber Classic Cuvee 2003 alongside (inter-alia) Dom Perignon 2000; Krug GC and Krug 1998. I was astounded by the mid palate complexity and length of finish on the Nyetimber, and scored it 91pts - just one point behind Dom P, which is 3-4 times more expensive. Krug GC excelled [95pts] with the more expensive Krug vintage coming in at 94pts. This experience has made us more comitted to finding further excellent English wines..........watch this space.
